Skibbereen Urban Arts Project returns for another bold and vibrant celebration of community, creativity, and place. This evolving initiative transforms overlooked laneways and public spaces in Skibbereen into permanent works of public art – bringing colour, culture, and storytelling to the town’s walls.
Last year’s project reimagined a historic laneway through large-scale murals exploring themes of heritage, sustainability, West Cork landscapes and identity. This year, the project expands between two significant buildings in the heart of Skibbereen, framing Vickerys Lane.
-
One side will depict the story of O'Donovan’s Pub, known locally as The Club, through scenes of its interior, customers, and snug bar, as remembered by the shop owner's family and local community.
-
The other side, located alongside Cleary’s Pharmacy, will celebrate the evolving history of a century-old shopfront - from grocery stores like Wolfe Bros., Waugh & Co. and J. Adams & Son to its modern role as a pharmacy - through imagery drawn from historical photographs and vintage product advertising.
This live street art will take place just before, and during, the festival, offering visitors and locals the chance to watch these murals come to life in real time. This is not only an art installation - it’s a shared experience, a moment of civic pride, and a growing mural trail that draws visitors and supports local tourism.
The Skibbereen Urban Arts Project is a fringe event of the Skibbereen Arts Festival and is made possible through the generous support of project sponsors, local creatives, participating businesses, and the wider Skibbereen community.
