Resonate: Back from the Bog

back to events

Performance at Windmill Rock

Saturday 25 July. 13:30. 20 minutes

A masked performance paying homage to natural wild spaces, using materials gathered from them in the costumes.

This performance will bring to theatrical life in a symbolic way words from the late Kerry philosopher John Moriarty. ‘All these fields, I could see, had been reclaimed or claimed for the first time from beneath the great raised bogs, only islands of which now remained. And the sense I had is that this land, rushy and wet, didn’t want to be claimed, didn’t want to be coerced into human intention and purpose. It was as though it resented its rebirth or its abortion back into daylight. And the best thing therefore to do with it would be to say a Requiem Mass on it…” John Moriarty from ‘Nostos’ An Autobiography

During the event, there will be a gathering, performance and movement of masked performers, with audience participation.

Bio: This work is conceived by artist Sonia Caldwell who has worked with local performers to bring this short taster piece to Resonate. Sonia works with a range of materials through carving, weaving and painting and has been working with wild gathered materials from Bog areas to create sculptural masks. This work connects to Sonia's exhibition Athmhúscail in Uilinn in 2025.
