Stories of Stone: exploring intimacy, deep time and the megaliths of Ireland
Allison Maria Rodriguez
Thursday 30 July at 1.30pm
Free, no booking required
In this talk, Rodriguez will give a brief overview of her artistic practice followed by a more in-depth discussion on her current/ongoing research into sacred landscapes and the megalithic structures of Ireland. Focusing on the spirit of stone as both active witness and evolutionary agent in the constant cyclical process of the earth’s becoming, Rodriguez highlights the deep intimacy between the human and the more-than-human world. Her work explores how these neolithic sites speak about climate change in relation to time, astronomy, divinity, geology, human history, and our role as ancestors of future generations.
Presented in collaboration with SWERVE
Allison Maria Rodriguez (she/her) is a first-generation Cuban-American interdisciplinary artist working predominately in video installation and based in Boston, MA. She creates immersive experiential spaces that challenge conventional ways of knowing and understanding the world. Her work focuses extensively on climate change, species extinction and the interconnectivity of existence. Her award-winning work has been on view internationally in both traditional and nontraditional art spaces.
Allison was recently the inaugural artist-in-residence for the Broad Trauma Initiative at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University (2025). She was also honored as the 2023 International Guest Artist-in-Residence at Digital Arts Studios in Belfast. Since her residency at DAS one of her primary focuses has been on sacred spaces within landscape, especially the megalithic structures of Ireland. One of her projects from this research was on view early last year as a 42-channel public art video installation at Penn Station in New York City.
During the Skibbereen Arts Festival, Allison will be in residence at SWERVE, a Skibbereen-based independent arts initiative that publishes a journal of contemporary writing and visual art while also supporting exhibitions, artist residencies, readings and creative collaborations in West Cork.
