Poet and composer Thaddeus Ó Buachalla is an exciting new voice. His début novel EL echoes the work of Umberto Eco in its bizarre fusion of science fantasy and historical fiction.

Immram an Phréacháin depicts a surreal journey through Cork City by two pals at night, with musical accompaniment from Sam Uí Bhuachalla (harp), Moze Jacobs (sax) and Paul McMahon (guitar and banjo)."

Thaddeus Ó Buachalla PhD writes exclusively in Irish. His first book was a postmodernist detective story. The second novel, El, set in a historic alternative reality, received an Oireachtas award in 2021 and won An Post Irish Language Book of the Year in 2022. He is working on his third novel, writes poetry, and is a multi-instrumentalist who composed the music for Immram an Phréacháin, which is semi-improvised. The piece was first performed at Dublin Castle during the IMRAM Irish-Language Literature Festival (part of the Dublin Book Festival) in November 2022. It has also been performed, in whole or in part, at the Clonakilty Community Arts Centre, Levis' Bar and the Working Artist Studios (WAS) in Ballydehob and will be staged during the Skibbereen Arts Festival (Uillinn, 3 August) and at Ionad Culturtha in Ballyvourney on September 10. It comes with projected bilingual surtitles.
