In the macro (microscopic) photography series, Lifeforms, biological structures with mechanical-looking features interrogate the relationship between nature and technology—a central theme in Todd's work. The often clinical images—frequently acquired using a computer-controlled robotic device—are paradoxically intended to invoke an emotional response. Intricate features suggest beauty—even sensuality—alongside grotesque elements that may produce embarrassment or repulsion and invoke notions of decay and death. If this is a machine, do machines die? If this is an organism, has it lost its purpose? How are notions of mechanical obsolescence and human death alike, or different?
