Cork composers, sisters Irene and Linda Buckley present a reimagined score to the 1920's gothic classic Nosferatu for organ, electronics, viola and cello.

A masterpiece of early horror cinema, recently restored, Nosferatu still has the power to send chills down the spine of cinemagoers 97 years after its creation. Now renowned Cork composers Irene and Linda Buckley present the film with a new score, utilising the majestic organ at Abbeystrewry Church, accompanied by viola, cello and electronics.

The eerie modern classical score – comprising beautiful recurrent themes together with moments of chilling dark ambience and intense, ominous drone – is so complementary to Murnau’s foreboding imagery that you would think they had always been together.

Irene Buckley, a composer from Cork, holds a BMus and a PhD in Composition from University College Cork, and an MA in Music Technology from Queens University Belfast.

Irene has written music for many film, theatre and dance productions. 

She composes live scores for silent films which include: Dreyer's The Passion of Joan of Arc -1928 (for soprano, organ and electronics) and Epstein's The Fall of the House of Usher – 1928 (for organ and electronics). Both were commissioned by the Cork French Film Festival and have since toured in venues such as Glasgow Cathedral for Glasgow Film Festival and Union Chapel, London. She recently composed a new live score (with Linda Buckley) for Noseratu – 1922 (for viola, cello, organ and electronics) which was commissioned by Union Chapel, London. 

Her score for The Swing was nominated for best score at FIFA Film Festival 2014, Aubagne, France.

Previous sound design for theatre include, Juno and the Paycock, (Everyman Palace productions, Cork), King Lear (Cyclone Theatre Company), The Chronicles of Oggle(Asylum Productions), Dark Week and The Train Show (Playgroup Theatre Company),The Glass Menagerie (Everyman Palace Productions), Snap (Corcadorca) and Disco Pigs (Granary Theatre Productions).

Previous dance productions include A Dance ConcertoFoldersAssembling Moments,Internal Facade and Abacus (with choreographer and dancer Laura Murphy) and Wunderbar and You and me, and You (with Laura Murphy and Rob Heaslip). Previous performances of these productions include Midsummer Festival Cork; Dublin Dance Festival; Project Arts Centre, Dublin; DanceLive, Aberdeen; Shenzhen, China and Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Linda Buckley is an Irish composer/performer based in Glasgow who has written extensively for orchestra (RTE National Symphony Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra), and has a particular interest in merging her classical training with the worlds of post punk, folk and ambient electronica.

Her work has been described as “fantastically brutal, reminiscent of the glitch music of acts such as Autechre” (Liam Cagney, Composing the Island) and “engaging with an area of experience that new music is generally shy of, which, simplified and reduced to a single word, I’d call ecstasy” (Bob Gilmore, Journal of Music).

Music for theatre includes work by Enda Walsh (Bedbound) and film by Pat Collins (Living in a Coded Land) and Tadhg O’Sullivan (Solas Céad Bliain). Awards include a Fulbright scholarship to New York University and the Frankfurt Visual Music Award 2011 (Silk Chroma).

Recent and upcoming collaborations include work with Mmoths, arrangements from This Mortal Coil, remixes for Augustus and John, new music with Laura Sheeran (Kuvn), as well as performances by Icebreaker, Iarla O’Lionaird, Joby Burgess, Ensemble Mise-En and Crash Ensemble. Linda also lectures in Composition at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland
